Robert Doak Lilley was born 28 January 1836 in Augusta County, Virginia. He attended Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. Lilley was in Charleston, South Carolina, when Fort Sumter was fired upon 12-13 April 1861. He immediately returned to Virginia, and enlisted in the Confederate army 27 May 1861. Lilley was appointed captain of his company 1 July 1861. Recognized for gallantry at the battles of Cedar Mountain and 2nd Manassas, Lilley was promoted to major 28 February 1863. Again praised for gallantry during the battle of Gettysburg, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel dating from 20 August 1863. Lilley was promoted to brigadier-general dating from 31 May 1864 and commanded a brigade in the 2nd Corps. He was wounded and captured in a reconnaissance near Winchester, Virginia, 20 July 1864. However, he was left by the Union army in Winchester and able to return to the Confederate army. His arm had been amputated by Union surgeons; some ladies of the city recovered it and presented to Lilley, who kept it until the day he died. After recovering from his wounds, Lilley commanded reserves in the Valley of Virginia from November 1864 to April 1865. He was paroled 23 May 1865 at Staunton, Virginia. After the war, Lilley taught surveying at Washington College and served as the institution's financial agent until his death in Richmond, Virginia, 12 November 1886. He was buried in Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.
