Biographical or historical data
Robert Hall Chilton was born 25 February 1815 in Loudoun County, Virginia. He attended the United States Military Academy from 1833 to 1837. After graduation, he served as a lieutenant in the United States army. Promoted to captain, he fought at the battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War and was brevetted a major for gallantry. Chilton resigned his commission 29 April 1861 and joined the Confederate army with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. During the war, he served as adjutant-general of the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee (1807-1870). Despite his close relationship with Lee, Chilton had difficulty achieving a promotion until 16 February 1864. The following April, Chilton asked to be relieved of field command and returned to the inspection branch as a colonel. After the Civil War, he became president of the Columbus Manufacturing Company in Columbus, Georgia. Chilton maried Laura T. Mason (1826-1911) of Westmoreland County, Virginia, and they had children. Chilton died 18 February 1879 at his office in Columbus. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
