Powers (1922-1980) of Dickenson County, Virginia, consisting of letters, 1942-1945, to his mother Estelle Powers (1901-1984) describing his military training at Camp Adair, Oregon; his wife Ellen "Boots" Powell and the birth of his daughter Carolyn (1943-); his service in Europe as a member of the service Company for 2nd Battalion, 415th Infantry, 104th Infantry Division; his reporting to camp on the west coast after he returned from Europe; and the impending failure of his marriage. Collection also contains patches for his rank and for the 104th Division, the Timberwolves; his dog tags; photographs; articles on the 104th; letter from General J. Lawton Collins (1896-1987) to General Terry Allen (1888-1969), commanding, 104th Division, about the division's performance; reminiscences; letterheads, stamps, and money; a memorial card on the death of Powers; and an article on the shooting down of a U.S. military drone in Iran. Biographical or historical data
Robert L. Powers was born 10 April 1922 in Dickenson County, Virginia, to Gilbert L. Powers (1900-1967) and Estelle Powers (1901-1984). Powers served in 2nd Battalion, 415th Infantry, 104th Infantry Division (the Timberwolves). Powers first marriage to Ellen Powers did not last, but the couple had one daughter. He married second Violet J. Bryant (1920-1988) on 27 July 1946, and they had at least one child. Powers died 1 October 1980, and was buried in the Harmony Baptist Church cemetery in Callaway County, Missouri.
