H. Russell Potts was born in Richmond, Virginia on 4 March 1939. He has served in the Virginia State Senate since 1992. Although a Republican, Potts decided run for Governor of Virginia as an independent. He ran a distant third in Virginia's gubernatorial election in 2005 behind Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican Jerry Kilgore.
