Biographical or historical data
William Le Roy Broun was born in Loudon County, Virginia, on 1 October 1827, to Edwin Conway Broun and his second wife Elizabeth Channell, daughter of Dr. James Channell, and granddaughter of William S. Pickett. In 1850, Broun graduated from the University of Virginia. He taught for a number of years at private schools and small colleges in Virginia and Mississippi before the outbreak of the Civil War. On 3 July 1861, Broun enlisted into the Confederate Army at Centerville and was commissioned into the Virginia Albemarle Light Artillery as a First Lieutenant. Broun was discharged fro promotion on 15 September 1862 where he was appointed Superintendent of the Richmond Arsenal, Richmond, Virginia. He soon rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Ordnance Department of the Confederate army. At the close of the war he was elected professor of natural philosophy of the University of Georgia, and from 1872-75 was president of the Georgia Agricultural and Mechanical College, a branch of the University. He was professor of mathematics in the University of Texas, 1883-84, and president of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (A. and M. College, now Auburn University) 1882-83, and from 1884 to his death on 23 January 1902.
