Biographical or historical data
Samuel Kirkland was born 1 December 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut to Rev. Daniel Kirkland and Hannah Perkins Kirkland. He was a Presbyterian missionary and lived among the Oneida and Tuscarora people. During the Revolutionary War, Kirkland became an advisor and ambassador for the Iroquois and was able to persuade many Oneidas and Tuscaraoras to assist the Americans. In 1793 he founded the Hamilton-Oneida Academy, later Hamilton College. He died in 1808 in Clinton, New York.
