Smith family papers
Inclusive dates
Papers, 1862-2002, of the Smith family of Petersburg and Dinwiddie County, Virginia, principally the family of George Payne Smith (1883-1934) and wife Eva Mason Carter Smith (1883-1967). Papers include birth, marriage, and death certificates; canceled checks; correspondence; deeds; genealogical notes; insurance policies; newspaper clippings; obituaries; photographs; postcards; receipts; report cards, certificates, and class reunion photos, chiefly from Petersburg High School; and World War II-era ration books. Among the correspondence are copies and transcripts of letters, 1862-1863, sent by Confederate soldier John Potts Davis (1840-1864) of the 41st Virginia Infantry. Also of note is a booklet of rules and information for patients of Catawba Sanatorium, where Ellen Smith Northington (1904-1930) was hospitalized before her death in 1930. Several letters between Ellen and various family members reflect on her time there. Also included are three scrapbooks, 1951-1973, kept by Lida Virginia Smith (later Kemery) (1920-2000), focusing on the Credit Women's Breakfast Club of Petersburg
