Biographical or historical data
The Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Virginia was formed on 28 June 1894 in Richmond, Virginia, with sixteen members. It was chartered by the General Assembly during the 1895-1896 session with the purpose of perpetuating and honoring "the memory of the men who assisted in establishing the Colonies of America, and imperiled their lives and interest." The Society was dormant for several years following the death of Joseph Bryan, its first governor, in 1908, but was reformed in 1913 and has been active since that time.
