Biographical or historical data
Colgate Whitehead Darden was born in Southampton County, Virginia on 11 February 1897. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1922 and Columbia University in 1923, and was admitted to the bar in 1922. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates (1930-1933), United States House of Representatives (1933-1937, 1939-1941), and as Governor of Virginia (1942-1946). From 1947 to 1959, Darden was the president of the University of Virginia. He died in Norfolk on 9 June 1981.
