Summary
These accession contains two sets of eleven blueprint reproductions depicting the architectural firm of Frye and Chesterman's plans for the rotunda and its east and west wings for the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University). The architects used Thomas Jefferson's rotunda at the University of Virginia as a model for their structure. These drawings show elevations, plans, cross-sections, and details for the auditorium and dormitory buildings. Currently known as the Ruffner Complex on the campus of Longwood University, the building suffered a devastating fire in April 2001. The building is slated to be fully reconstructed in 2005

Biographical or historical data
Longwood University is a state-supported, coeducational school developed from the Farmville Female Seminary (incorporated 1839). In 1884, the school was renamed the State Female Normal School and was the first publically supported institution for teacher education in the Commonwealth. Following a number of name changes, the institution became Longwood College in 1949. The name comes from an estate that is now part of the school property. Longwood became coeducational in 1976. In July 2003, Longwood College became Longwood University.
