Transcript of an interview with William (Bill) Jett (b. ca. 1920), a surveyor attached to the 8th and then the 9th Army Air Forces during World War II. Jett recounts his early work as a surveyor at the Richmond Army Air Base; making improvements to a Royal Air Force airfield in Ipswich, England; taking cover during a German air attack on England's Ducksford Air Base; befriending a wealthy English family; preparations for D-Day; refurbishing airfields in Belgium, France, and Holland for use by Allied fighter planes; impressions of the European people; and various encounters with hostile fire. Jett also discusses aspects of his post-war life, including inactive Army reserve service during the Korean War. Also included is an undated photograph of Jett in uniform

Biographical or historical data
William (Bill) Jett was born around 1920. He completed one year of college at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (V.P.I.), Richmond extension, before receiving word in 1942 that he would soon be drafted by the Army. Using the training he had received at V.P.I., Jett took a surveying job at the Richmond Army Air base. After being inducted into the Army, he did surveying work for the 8th and 9th Army Air Forces. His service took him to England, France, Belgium, Holland, and the outskirts of Germany. After the war, Jett took advantage of the G.I. Bill in order to complete his education at V.P.I. in Blacksburg. He married a woman named Sue in 1948, and graduated from V.P.I. in 1949. For several years, he was a member of the Army reserves, and narrowly avoided being sent overseas for the Korean War. Later, he became a partner in an engineering and surveying business in Richmond.
