Tarleton Brown was born 5 April 1757 in Albemarle County, Virginia, to William Brown and his wife. In 1769 the Brown family moved to Barnwell District, South Carolina, purchasing land along the Savannah River. After the American Revolution began, Brown enlisted in the South Carolina militia as a private and eventually rose to the rank of captain. He was present at the siege of Savannah, the battle of Moncks Corner, and the siege of Augusta. His father and other family members were killed by Tories. Brown served as corner and sheriff of Winton County, South Carolina. He was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives and served from 1792 to 1798, and then served in the South Carolina Senate in 1798-1799. Brown was elected sheriff of Barnwell County, South Carolina and served from 1799 to 1804. Brown married Almedia Matthews (1770-1800) in 1788 and they had three children. He married Judith O'Bannon Cook (d. 1837), a widow, on 16 May 1804, and they had four children. Tarleton Brown died 4 September 1845 in Barnwell County, and is buried in the cemetery of the Baptist Church at Boiling Springs, Barwell, District.
