Biographical or historical data
In 1763 George Washington and others organized an unincorporated syndicate known as "The Company Engaged in the Grant of Land in the Dismal Swamp," later known as Dismal Swamp Company. The Company eventually acquired over 40,000 acres of land in the Dismal Swamp. Washington and his partners were convinced that portions of the land could be drained and reclaimed as rich farming land. Prior to his death, Washington valued his holdings in the company land at $20,000.
