The Quarles Preacher Brothers is a biographical sketch of Thomas Delaware Quarles (1832-1864) and George Henry Quarles (1832-1865) of King William County, Virginia. Both served as state missionaries for the Baptist Church. Both brothers died of wounds received in battle during the Civil War. The sketch was written by Lemuel Cleveland Quarles (1885-1972) of Richmond, Virginia, and their nephew. It most likely appeared in the RELIGIOUS HERALD

Biographical or historical data
Lemuel Cleveland Quarles was born 1 November 1885 in Henrico County, Virginia. A member of a family which was very active as ministers and missionaries in the Baptist Church, Quarles attended the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia, and Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and upon the completion of his education, became a minister. Quarles married Jennie Saunders (1887-1955) of Caroline County, Virginia, 14 September 1910. They were one of the first missions sent to Uruguay by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, and there they served from 1913 to 1929. The Quarleses then moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he taught at the Southern Baptist seminary. Upon retirement in 1950, he and his wife moved back to Richmond, Virginia. In 1959, four years after his first wife's death, Quarles married Clara Gahler Freeman (1898-1978), another South American missionary. Quarles died 27 October 1972 in Richmond, Virginia, and was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
