The Virginia Gazette, like most other colonial area newspapers generally carried three types of materials: news, advertisements and literary and entertainment pieces. Complying with an act of the Assembly the Virginia Gazette also published all laws for the colony

  • William Parks arrived in Williamsburg in 1730 and set up a print shop, and was soon appointed "public printer of Virginia" by the Assembly, who also furnished him with an annual salary to print its acts and public documents.
  • First published in 1736 by William Parks, Williamsburg, Virginia, The Virginia Gazette was the only newspaper printed in the colony until 1766. Toward the end of the Revolutionary War, in 1779, the capital was moved to Richmond, as did the Virginia Gazette.
