Biographical or historical data
Westmoreland Davis was born 21 August 1859. He grew up in Richmond, Virginia and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1877. After studying law at Columbia University, Davis became an attorney in New York City. In 1903, he returned to Virginia, moving to Loudoun County with his wife, Marguerite Inman. He became a successful dairy farmer and co-founded the Virginia Dairymen's Association. He also served as president of the Virginia State Farmers' Institute, transforming it into a powerful lobbying group. In 1912, Davis purchased the SOUTHERN PLANTER, a monthly agricultural paper. He won a three-way race to become governor in 1918. In 1922, he challenged incumbent U. S. Senator Claude A. Swanson in the Democratic Primary and was defeated. He died 7 September 1942.
