Letters, 1862-1864, from Thomas Hunton Foster (1835-1864) of Company H, 6th Virginia Cavalry, to his parents James William Foster (1808-1866) and Sarah Hunton Foster (1811-1888) of Fauquier County, Virginia, and to "Willie," as well as letters between James William Foster and Thomas Hunton Foster while the latter was a prisoner of war at Johnson's Island, Ohio. Internal evidence indicates that letters dated 13 February 1863, 5 March 1863, and 31 March 1863, were written in 1864

Biographical or historical data
Thomas Hunton Foster was born 18 May 1835 in Fauquier County, Virginia, to James William Foster (1808-1866) and Sarah Hunton Foster (1811-1888). When the Civil War began, Foster enlisted in the 7th Virginia Cavalry, but later transferred to Company H, 6th Virginia Cavalry. He was promoted to lieutenant 6 February 1863. Foster was captured by Union troops during fighting near Brandy Station, Virginia, on 13 September 1863. He was first sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio, then transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland. Foster died of illness at Point Lookout 21 August 1864. He is buried at the family cemetery at the Plains, Virginia.
