Ledger, 1794-1824, of Thomas R. Barnes (d. 1841) of Richmond County, Virginia, containing personal and business accounts relating to the operation of his plantation at Mulberry Island. The volume was also used by his father, Richard Barnes (1772-1820), from 1794 to 1803. Also included in this accession is a letter by Mary Esther (Starling) Wright (1808-1865) and her daughter in Essex County, Virginia to another daughter in Middlesex County, as well as writings of Emily Robinette Wright (ca. 1838-1854), and a photograph of "Greenway" in Essex County

Biographical or historical data
Richard Barnes was born in Essex County, Virginia in 1772. He married Rebecca Roane (ca. 1771-1824) on 27 January 1799. They resided in Richmond County, Virginia. He represented the county in the Virginia General Assembly as a member of the House of Delegates from 1796 to 1801, and the Senate from 1803 to 1806. Their son, Thomas R. Barnes, died in 1841. He also represented Richmond County in the House of Delegates from 1826 to 1830. A daughter, Charlotte, married William Alfred Wright (d. 1858). Their son was Judge Thomas Roane Barnes Wright (1839-1914).
