Biographical or historical data
Thomas Vickroy was born on 18 October 1756 in Cecil County, Maryland, the first of six children born to Hugh Vickroy and Margaret Phillips Vickroy. He moved to Bedford, Pennsylvania, in 1772 and learned to survey. He served as a commissary under George Rogers Clark, and took part in a 1780 expedition to Kentucky and present-day Ohio. In 1784, he was one of the lead surveyors laying out what became the city of Pittsburgh. Later, he was a figure in the early days of the iron industry in Pennsylvania. Vickroy was married twice, first to Elizabeth Williams and second to Sarah Atlee, and had a total of eighteen children with the two women. He died on 9 June 1845 at Alum Bank, Pennsylvania.
