John Jehu Trainer was born to Michael D. (1816-1896) and Rachel Virginia Gum Trainer (1814-1887) near Monterey, Highland County, Virginia, on 30 December 1836. Prior to the Civil War, John Trainer worked as a farmer in Highland and Greenbrier Counties. He enlisted at Hevener's Store on 11 June 1861 and eventually rose in rank to the position of Sergeant. His career in the Confederate States Army was often interrupted by periods of absence due to illness or to wounds suffered at Antietam and the Wilderness. After suffering a gunshot wound at Fort Stedman in late March 1865, Trainer was sent to Chimborazo Hospital where he remained until Richmond fell. He then returned home and was later pardoned in May 1865 at Staunton, Virginia. Following the war Trainer returned to his farm near Neola, Greenbrier County. He wrote some articles for the Pocahontas Times concerning his experiences as a Confederate Soldier. On 10 April 1866 Trainer married Sarah Elizabeth Hamilton (1849-1917) of Greenbrier County. The couple reared fifteen children. He died on 8 April 1927 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, and was buried in Trainer Family Cemetery in Pocahontas County, West Virginia.
