Biographical or historical data
Born in England in 1634, John Washington emigrated to Virginia with his wife and two children in 1658 and settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His wife and children died shortly thereafter, and Washington married Ann Pope in 1660. Establishing his plantation, Wakefield, he became a land proprietor, importing colonists to Virginia. Washington represented Westmoreland in the House of Burgesses from 1665 to 1677. He also served as a colonel in the colonial militia and led Virginia and Maryland militia against a large force of Indians. Washington and his wife had 4 children, and were the great-grandparents of George Washington (1732-1799).
