Letters, 1942-1945, of the Pettit family of Louisa County, Virginia, consisting of correspondence from (Clarence) Pembroke Pettit (1908-1975), an officer in the Army Air Corps stationed at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, to his father William Albert Claude Pettit (b. ca. 1878) of Louisa County concerning Pembroke's duties as an Army Air Corps officer; the family farm, including crops and livestock; the family business; taxes; Pembroke's brothers, three of whom are in the military; and Congressman Howard Worth Smith (1883-1976). Correspondence also includes a letter, 28 April 1943, from W. A. C. Pettit to his son Overton Baker Pettit (1921-) concerning financial help for Overton from his brother William Albert Claude Pettit, Jr. (1906-1990); a postcard, July 1943, from Milton Caldwell Pettit (1913-1991) to Gardena Pettit (b. ca. 1883) giving his military address; a letter, 16 November 1944, from Overton Pettit to his father W. A. C. Pettit concerning his plans when he is out of the military; and a letter, n.d., from Gardena Pettit to her husband W. A. C. Pettit concerning their sons and family matters. Letters also include envelopes, 1943-1945, which contained no letters

William Albert Claude Pettit (b. ca. 1878) and his wife Gardena Pettit (b. ca. 1883) had six children: William Albert Claude (1906-1990), Clarence Pembroke (1908-1975), Sherman Wills (1910-1981), Milton Caldwell (1913-1991), Harriett F. (1919-), and Overton Baker (1921-). Pembroke, Sherman, Milton, and Overton all served in the military during World War II.
