Biographical or historical data
When it was organized about 1619, Elizabeth City Parish and the county with which it was coterminous extended over a large area from the York River across the peninsula and across the James River and on south. The area was greatly reduced in 1636 when New Norfolk County was formed, and Elizabeth River Parish was created for all of the portion south of the James. Since that time Elizabeth City Parish has contained all of the original county of Elizabeth City on the north side of the James. In 1952 Elizabeth City County was merged with the city of Hampton and ceased to exist.
