Summary
Papers, 1777-1786, of Patrick Henry (1736-1799), Governor of Virginia, consisting of letters and a land grant. Letters include four letters to Colonel Charles Lewis of Albemarle County, Virginia, ordering him to march his men to join General George Washington, reviewing plans for the Virginia militia to guard British troops captured at the battle of Saratoga, and noting that guns and flints will be sent to arm the militia guard at the Albemarle barracks; and one letter to Governor Richard Caswell (1729-1789) of North Carolina discussing possible action by the British along the Eastern Shore and recommending opening a front there if necessary and commenting on General John Burgoyne's troops in New York. Also contains a land grant, 18 April 1786, for 2,000 acres in Harrison County, (West) Virginia, from Governor Patrick Henry to James Newport, William Kay, John Shields, John Redman, and Robert McNight, attorneys and trustees for Isaac Sidman

Biographical or historical data
Patrick Henry was born 29 May 1736 in Hanover County, Virginia, to John and Sara Winston Henry. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and Virginia Convention, governor of Virginia 1776-1779, 1784- 1786, and delegate to the Virginia Constitution Ratification Convention, 1788. He was married to Sarah Shelton and Dorothea Dandridge. He died 6 June 1799 at his home on Red Hill Plantation, Charlotte County, Virginia.
