Jones represented Frederick County in the House of Burgesses from 1748 to 1753. About 1754, he moved to that part of Augusta County which became Rockingham County, Virginia. He represented Augusta County in the House of Burgesses from 1756 to 1758 and 1769 to 1771 and Hampshire County, (West) Virginia, in 1755 and from 1758 to 1761. Jones also represented Rockingham County in the House of Delegates in 1783, and in the ratifying convention of 1788. Jones married Margaret Strother Martin (1728-1822) 18 October 1748, and they had five children. Jones died 6 October 1806, and was buried at his family estate, "Bogata," in Rockingham County.
