Letter, 31 August 1864, written by John Washington Ashby (1828-1867), a surgeon with the 56th Virginia Infantry, to his brother Henry Marshall Ashby (1836-1868), colonel of the 2nd Tennessee Cavalry. The letter was written while Dr. Ashby was stationed at a military hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. Topics include Col. Henry Ashby's wounded foot and his brother's request that he come to Charlotte where he can care for it. Dr. Ashby also mentions the death of his wife's brother in combat, and expresses his regret at Col. Ashby not receiving his expected promotion to brigadier general

Biographical or historical data
John Washington Ashby was born in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1828. He was the son of Marshall Ashby (1798-1850) and Lucinda Cocke (1806-1878). He married Agnes Marian Taylor (ca. 1839-1895) in Caroline County on 18 April 1859. Ashby received his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania. He enlisted with the 7th Virginia Infantry on 30 April 1861, but was later transferred to the 56th. On 2 April 1862, Ashby was promoted to surgeon. He served at military hospitals in Farmville, Manassas, Orange Courthouse, and Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina. Ashby died in Mississippi in 1867. He and his wife are buried in the family cemetery in Delaplane, Virginia.
