Biographical or historical data
Thomas McKean Thompson McKennan was born 31 March 1794 in New Castle County, Delaware. His family moved to Washington, Pennsylvania, where he attended public schools. McKennan graduated from Washington College in 1810 and studied studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1814 and served as deputy attorney general from 1815 to 1816. McKennan was elected to the United States House of Representatives and served from 1831 to 1839 and from 1842 to 1843. He served as president of the Pennsylvania electoral college in 1848. President Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) appointed McKennan Secretary of the Interior, but he served only one month from 15 August to 12 September 1850. McKennan served as president of the Hempfield Railroad, which would become the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. McKennan died 9 July 1852 in Reading, Pennsylvania, and was buried in Washington Cemetery in Washington, Pennsylvania.
