Biographical or historical data
Edward Herndon (1730-1799) settled at "Locust Grove" in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He married in 1754/55 Mary Duerson (d. 1806). Herndon was active in the Anglican Church and was collector of the Parish levies from 1750 to 1768, when he became a church warden. Herndon received a land grant in Kentucky for 7023 acres, possibly for serving in the French and Indian War. He served on the Committee of Safety for Spotsylvania County and as a captain in the colonial militia during the American Revolution. He received more land in Kentucky for this service. A prosperous land owner, he had 10 children, including Joseph Herndon (1773-1832). Joseph Herndon also was a prosperous land owner and a devout Baptist. He held several county posts including Commissioner of Revenue and Treasurer. Herndon also served as paymaster of the 16th Virginia militia. He and his wife, Lucy Duerson Herndon (1770-1840) had four children, including Alexander Herndon (1801-1876), who settled on Herndon family land and established "Maple Grove." Like his father, Alexander was a prominent citizen of Spotsylvania County and a devout Baptist. The Herndons intermarried with other prominent Spotsylvania families: the Duersons, Frazers, and Lewises.
