Biographical or historical data
William Bassett was born in New Kent County, Virginia, between late 1670 and 28 August 1671 to William Bassett (d. 1671) and Bridget Cary Bassett. Inheriting property from his father, Bassett became a wealthy planter and built his home Eltham in New Kent County. He represented New Kent County in the House of Burgesses from 1693 to 1699, and briefly in the 1700-1702 session. He was sheriff and justice of the peace in 1699. Bassett was appointed to the Governor's Council, serving from 1702 to 1710 and from 1715 to 1723. Bassett married Joanna Burwell (1674-1727) 28 November 1693, and they had twelve children. Bassett died 11 October 1723 in New Kent County and was buried at Eltham. In 1879, he and his wife were reburied in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
