Biographical or historical data
The Franklin Society and Library of Lexington, Virginia was established in 1811 for the purpose of providing materials for the study of society's problems and to encourage debate on these issues. John W. Fuller (1797-1876) served as librarians from 1823 to 1876. Upon Fuller's retirement, John A. R. Varner served as librarian from 1877 until the Society was disbanded in 1891. The contents of the library were transferred to the Washington and Lee University Library.
