Biographical or historical data
George W. Thompson was born 23 February 1749 in Hanover County, Virginia, son of Joseph and Sarah Claiborne Thompson. He served in the British Army prior to the Revolutionary War. At the start of the Revolutionary War, he was assigned the rank of Major in the Virginia Army from Albemarle County. He also served in the Virginia House of Delegates from Fluvanna County in 1781. After the war Thompson was one of the first to migrate and settle in Mercer County, Kentucky. He married Rebecca Burton 6 December 1773. The couple had at least two children. George W. Thompson died 22 March 1834 in Mercer County.
