Letters, 1824-1864, of the Welsh family of Rockbridge County, Virginia, and Missouri, Indiana, Iowa, and Illinois. Letters mostly concern family news between branches. Of particular interest are the following letters: letter, dated 28 June 1844, from William Welsh of Richmond, Virginia, to John P. Welsh of Rockbridge County concerning the collapse of a club house built by the Whig party in Richmond; letters, dated 23 May 1861, 26 May 1861, and 2 June 1861, between brothers John P. Welsh of Rockbridge County and James L. Welsh of Illinois concerning the events leading up to the beginning of the civil war; and letter, dated 8 July 1863, from John P. Welsh to his wife Rebecca informing her of his mortal wounds received at the battle of Gettysburg. Also of interest are other letters written by John P. Welsh while an officer in Company B, 27th Virginia Infantry, and letters by James L. Welsh while a soldier in Company C, 78th Illinois Infantry

The Welsh family lived in Rockbridge County, Virginia. John P. Welsh and his wife had at least 2 sons, John W. Payne Welsh (1831-1863) and James L. Welsh. James L. Welsh moved to Illinois before the Civil War. When the war began, John P. Welsh became a captain in Company B, 27th Virginia Infantry and James L. Welsh became a private in Company C, 78th Illinois Infantry. John W. P. Welsh died 15 July 1863 in Williamsport, Maryland, from wounds suffered in the battle of Gettysburg. John W. P. Welsh's wife was named Rebecca; James L. Welsh's wife's name was Mary. John P. Welsh's brother-in-law James Logan moved to Missouri in the early 1820s, while a cousin, James Welsh (d. 1825) moved to Indiana.
