Papers, 27 February 1700/1-30 December 1701, of Francis Nicholson (1655-1728), Governor of Virginia, consisting of letters from Nicholson to Lewis Burwell (ca. 1651-1710), Martha Lear Burwell (1668-1704), and Lucy Burwell (1683-1716), concerning Nicholson's courting of Lucy Burwell. Includes to two letters to Major William Dent (1660-1704) of Maryland dealing with business matters and also mentions the Burwell family. Also contains memoranda for Nicholson's messenger to the Burwells regarding the courtship, and a reply from Lewis Burwell. Originals are located at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Library in Williamsburg, Virginia

Biographical or historical data
Francis Nicholson was born at "Downhame Park," near Richmond, England, on 12 November 1655. He entered the English army in 1678 and served in New England. Nicholson was lieutenant governor of New York from 1688 to 1689 and of Virginia from 1690 to 1692. He served as governor of Maryland from 1694 to 1698, of Virginia from 1698 to 1705, of Nova Scotia in 1713, and of South Carolina from 1721 to 1725. Nicholson helped found The College of William and Mary. Never married, Nicholson died in London, England on 5 March 1728.
