Letters, March-May 1865, from Hervey E. Eaton of Company H, 2nd New York Cavalry to his mother Emily Goodrich of Fayetteville, Onondaga County, New York, consisting of: a) letter, 28 March 1865, letting his mother know that he has reached City Point, Virginia, where his regiment is joining the Army of the Potomac, informing her that he was part of the "great raid" by Philip Sheridan's (1831-1888) troops; b) letter, 29 March 1865, sending news and a photograph (not included); c) letter, 26 April 1865, stating that Sheridan had taken some of the cavalry to North Carolina, but his regiment has remained behind and having a "soft thing" in camp life, informing her that he is acting quartermaster of the regiment, telling her he has sent home items, and providing personal news; d) letter, 7 May 1865, containing personal news and asking about news from home; and e) letter, 15 May 1865, informing her that his regiment may be mustered out soon as it has nothing to do since the war ended

Biographical or historical data
  • Hervey E. Eaton was born in 1844 in Fayetteville, Onondaga County, New York to Harry Eaton and Emily Eaton (ca. 1811-1887). He enlisted as a private in Company H, 2nd N.Y. Cavalry 3 September 1864. He served with his company and regiment in the final days of the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley and the last campaign leading to Appomattox. He was promoted to sergeant. After the war, Eaton returned to Fayetteville and became a student. He received a brevet commission, to 2nd lieutenant 31 December 1866 for faithful and meritorious services during the war.
  • Eaton's mother Emily Eaton remarried and became Emily Goodrich.
