At various times the family ran several stores known as John S. West & Co., West & Agee, and West Bros. It is unknown to which store these records relate. Biographical or historical data
  • John S. West, Jr. (1815-1878), was the son of John S. West, Sr. and Martha Satterwhite West of Chesterfield County, Virginia. He married Sarah Elizabeth Agee (1827-1894) on 11 April 1844 and operated a general store and post office near the Buckingham Female Institute. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Institute, as post master of Gravel Hill, and as Justice of the Peace for Buckingham County. His wife, Sarah West served as postmaster from 1866-1868.
  • William C. Agee (1828-1888) operated a general store in Buckingham County, Virginia. He was the brother of Sarah Elizabeth Agee West.
  • The Buckingham Female Collegiate Institute, established in 1837, was the first college for women in Virginia. It failed in 1843 but reopened in 1848 and survived until 1863 when it was permanently closed.
