Summary
  • Vestry book, 1747 September 8-1816 April 15, 1831. Cumberland Parish apparently did not suffer the confusion experienced in some other parishes with disestablishment. The minutes are consistently recorded to 1816, followed by processioners' records, 1759-1784. For transcription see CUMBERLAND PARISH VESTRY BOOK, 1747-1816, by Landon C. Bell, 1930. Accession 30093 is the manuscript copy of this volume. (Accession 19748)
  • St. John's Church, Register, 1831-1949, 1955-1956 including parishioners, baptisms, confirmations, communicants, marriages, burials, and two pages of church offerings, 1851-1856, 1873-1881, which name the institutions to which the money was given. Notations are made in the list of communicants for 1955-1956. See Cumberland Parish Register, 1831-1968 (LVA accession 41809) for an updated copy of this register

Biographical or historical data
In 1745, Lunenburg County was formed from Brunswick County, and St. Andrew's Parish was divided to form Cumberland Parish to cover the new county. Lunenburg County and Cumberland Parish embraced a large area which was subsequently divided into a number of counties and parishes, some of which became a part of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, the remainder a part of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. See CUMBERLAND PARISH VESTRY BOOK, 1746-1816, by Landon C. Bell, 1930, which includes a history of the parish, description of vestry duties, sketches of ministers, genealogical notes, and a map showing the original area of the parish. No early parish register is known to exist, but the Reverend John Cameron, who was rector from 1796 to 1815, left his own register (Accession 20077).
