James Cook Birdsong was born in Southampton County, Virginia, 15 March 1843 to Miles Birdsong and Dolly Graves Birdsong. He was apprenticed to Crutchfield and Campbell, printers in Petersburg, Virginia, in 1856. When the Civil War began, Birdsong enlisted in Company B, 12th Virginia Infantry. Illness kept him in a hospital in Richmond, Virginia, for the Summer and Fall of 1862. Birdsong was captured at the battle of Chancellorsville 2 May 1863, but exchanged by the following September. He was wounded at the battle of Cold Harbor, but remained with the army until its surrender at Appomattox. In 1866, he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where he was a printer for Edwards and Broughton. From 1876 to 1897, Birdsong was the examiner of state printing, and was North Carolina's state librarian from 1885 to 1893. He produced BRIEF SKETCHES OF THE NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS IN THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES in 1894. He married Ophelia Crocker (b. ca. 1840) in 1867, and they had seven children. Birdsong died in Raleigh 18 June 1918.
