Biographical or historical data
King William Parish was formed by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in December, 1700. The parish was created to enable French Protestant refugees (Huguenots), who had been settled above the falls on the James River near Manakin Town, to have their own church and to set their own parish tithes. The parish, or a portion of it, was in the following counties: Henrico (1700-1728), Goochland and Henrico (1728-1749), Cumberland (1749-1777), and Powhatan (1777 to date). From the beginning Manakin Church has been the only congregation in the parish.
