Biographical or historical data
Miles Percy DuVal was born 19 April 1896 in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Miles P. DuVal and Minnie Lee Chalkley DuVal. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1918, and attended the United States Naval War College in 1925-1926 and the United States Naval Post Graduate School in 1930-1931. After various assignments in the 1930s, DuVal was appointed port captain at the Pacific terminus of the Panama Canal. He commanded the U.S.S. Dade in the Pacific Theater from 1944 to 1946, and participated in the Okinawa campaign. After World War II, DuVal served as head of the Navy's Panama Canal moderization studies program. He retired from the Navy in 1949. DuVal was active in organizations concerned with the Panama Canal, including the Panama Canal Natural History Society. DuVal was the author of several books, including three on the canal. He died in Washington D.C. 25 December 1989.
