Biographical or historical data
Joseph F. Ellis was born 29 December 1806 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, the son of William Ellis (1784-1829) and Elizabeth Ellis (1786-1848). A successful planter, he married Charlotte Jane Ellis 1 December 1830. One of their children was Joseph Ellis who was born 5 December 1841. He enlisted in Neblett's Artillery at the start of the Civil War, and served with it in its various incarnations as Company H, 9th Virginia Infantry; Company H, 28th Virginia Infantry Battalion; and Company H, 59th Virginia Infantry; until the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox. After the Civil War, Joseph Ellis served as sheriff of Lunenburg County, and represented the county in the House of Delegates from 6 December 1899 until his death 19 January 1900.
