The will is verified as Byrd's by Governor Francis Nicholson (1655-1728), Littlebury Epps, Henry Duke, Jr., and Joshua Wynne on 12 January 1704/5. Also includes letter by donor providing additional information. A copy of Byrd's will is published in the WILLIAM & MARY QUARTERLY, series 2, volume 3, 246-249, and contains a codicil to the will, also verified by Nicholson and others, not included here

Biographical or historical data
William Byrd I was born in London England in 1652 and married Mary Horsemaden (1652-1699) in 1673. Byrd arrived in Virginia in 1674 and became a successful planter and merchant. He acquired and built "Westover." Byrd served in the House of Burgesses, on the Governor's Council, and as Receiver General for the colony of Virginia. He also briefly served as acting governor in 1700, 1703, and 1704. He had five children, one of whom was William Byrd II (1674-1744).
