Lectures on materia medica, ca. 1812, consisting of lecture notes taken by John Dove (1792-1876) of Richmond, Virginia, while a student attending medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. The lectures were delivered by Dr. Benjamin Smith Barton (1766-1815) and Dr. Nathaniel Chapman (1780-1853). The volume also includes four medical works written by Dove, "A Dissertation on the Curative Powers of Nature," ca. 1812, submitted to the examination of the medical faculty of Pennsylvania for the degree of Doctor of Medicine; "A Dissertation on the Disease Commonly Called Chronic Peritonites Read before the Virginia Medical Society on 19 May 1821;" "Report of the Committee Upon Vaccine and Varioloid Disease, Drawn up by John Dove, Chairman of the Committee, and Read before the Medical Society of Virginia on Saturday the 20th April 1822;" and "Reflections on Anomalous Bilious Fever, with a Case in Point, Read before the Medical Society of Va. by John Dove, Richmond, 19 June 1824." Biographical or historical data
John Dove was born 2 September 1792 in Richmond, Virginia. He received a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, then returned to Richmond where he became a practicing physician. Dove became a Freemason, joining St. John's Lodge 36 in December 1813. In 1818, he became Grand Secretery of the Grand Chapter, and in 1834 became Grand Secretery of the Grand Lodge, a position he held until his death in 1876. Dove also became Grand Recorder of the Grand Commandery of Virginia, serving from 1845 to 1876. Dove became a noted ritualist, historian, scholar, and administrator of masonry, compiling and editing several works, including PROCEEDINGS OF THE GRAND LODGE OF VIRGINIA 1777-1823 and the ROYAL ARCH TEXT BOOK. Dove married Ann Eliza Ege (1789-1865) 28 November 1814, and he died in Richmond 16 November 1876.
