Biographical or historical data
John Spotswood (1748-1800) of Orange County, Virginia, was the grandson of Governor Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740). John Spotswood served as an officer in the American army during the Revolution. He married Sarah Rowzie (1751-1804) 19 September 1771, and they had 10 children. One of their sons, Dandridge Spotswood (1787-1849) moved to Petersburg, Virginia. He served in the War of 1812. Dandridge Spotswood married Catherine Brooke Francisco (1801-1863) of Buckingham County, Virginia, 29 October 1818, and they had 10 children. Their son William Francisco Spotswood (1827-1895) and his wife Isabella Matoica Dunlop Spotswood (1848-1922) were the parents of Martha Dunlop Spotswood (1885-1981) who donated the papers to the Virginia State Library.
