Suit papers, 1814, from the Superior Court of Rowan County, North Carolina, for the suit of Charles Blanton (ca. 1762-1816) vs. David Smith consisting of: a copy of a deed of trust, 19 August 1791, for two slaves from Richard Blanton (d. ca. 1819) of Caroline County, Virginia, and Phillip Vaughan of Halifax County, Virginia, to Charles Blanton of Essex County, Virginia; instructions, n.d., to David Smith of Rowan County, North Carolina, to travel to Caroline County and ascertain and confirm certain facts in the case; and notice, 12 April 1814, from Charles Blanton to David Smith outlining Blanton's itinerary for the taking of depositions in this case. Case involves two slaves given by Richard Blanton to his daughter Peggy (d. by 1791) when she married Phillip Vaughan, who were given in a deed of trust by Blanton and Vaughan to Charles Blanton for the children of Peggy and Phillip Vaughan. One of these slaves eventually ended up being purchased by David Smith

Biographical or historical data
Charles Blanton was born about 1762 in Caroline County, Virginia, to Richard Blanton (d. ca. 1819) and Ann Sneed Blanton. Blanton died between 23 October 1816, when he wrote his will, and 9 December 1816, when it was probated in the Caroline County Court.
