Papers, 1973, compiled by John Edward Damerel (1905-1995) concerning the Revolutionary War Campaign of 1781, principally Tarleton's Raid. The compiler corresponded with Elie Weeks (1903-1984), one of a committee appointed by the Virginia Bicentennial Commission to prepare a map showing all military activities in Virginia, 1774-1783. The movements of Banastre Tarleton (1754-1833) are the primary topic of the correspondence. The movements in each county visited by Tarleton are detailed and maps showing the movements are included. Correspondents include Elie Weeks (1903-1984) of Goochland County, Virginia, Pauline Edwards (1908-1998) and Marian A. Fawcett (1903-1982) of Campbell County, Virginia, Virginia George Redd (1925-1993) of Prince Edward County, Virginia, Edward A. Wyatt (1910-1981) of Petersburg, Virginia, and Dr. John R. Biographical or historical data
John Edward Damerel was born 27 April 1905 in Montclair New Jersey. He graduated from Princeton University in 1927 and went to work at Macy's Department store in New York City. In 1943, he began working for J. N. Adams Department Store in Buffalo, New York. Damerel took a job with Thalheimer's in Richmond, Virginia, in 1946. He then became personnel director for the city of Richmond, holding that position from 1955 until his retirement in 1970. Damerel was a director of the Red Cross and of the Richmond Metropolitan Blood Services. He married Kathryn Smith (1906-1998) in 1929 and they had four children. Damerel died in Richmond 12 August 1995.
