Biographical or historical data
Charles Browne Fleet was born 18 September 1843 in King and Queen County, Virginia, to Christopher Bennett Fleet (1796-1845) and Lucy Ann Semple Fleet. He attended both Fleetwood Academy and Stevensville Academy before attending schools in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Fleet then matriculated at Columbian College in Washington D.C. When the Civil War began, he left the college and eventually joined the Fredericksburg Artillery, becoming a sergeant. Fleet served throughout the war, and in some works his artillery gun is credited with firing the last shot at Appomattox. After the Civil War, he attended the University of Virginia, then became a pharmacist. Fleet relocated to Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1869, and opened his own drug store. He served as the Secretary of the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association from 1888 to 1911, and served two terms on the Board of Pharmacy of Virginia. He established the C. B. Fleet Company and invented Chapstick. Fleet married Emma Burrus of King William County 15 February 1870, and they had 8 children, three of whom died in infancy. Fleet died 12 May 1916 in Lynchburg.
