Biographical or historical data
William Robert Ezell was born in Brunswick County on 25 June 1837. He was the son of Buckner Davis Ezell and Mary Ann Pattric May. Ezell attended the Medical Department of the University of Virginia, Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and Atlanta Medical College in Georgia, where he graduated in 1861. When the Civil War broke out, he was enlisted into Neblitt’s Artillery, where he attained the rank of lieutenant. He was captured three days before the war ended at the Battle of Saylers Creek, and imprisoned at Johnson Island, Ohio, until he was released on 18 June 1865. After the war, he resumed his medical practice in Brunswick County. He married twice: 1) Eva Gregg (1857-1904) in 1880 and 2) Alice Burton (d. 1972) on 10 May 1911. Dr. Ezell died on 26 June 1917 and is buried in Rock Methodist Church Cemetery.
