Records, 1791-1834, of the Dismal Swamp Canal Company of Virginia. Includes a list of subscribers, 1791, a list of additional subscriptions received by the president and directors of the company at Norfolk, 1792, and a list of additional subscriptions taken pursuant to an order of 6 September 1796, and including abstracts of minutes of meetings of the board of directors. Each of these lists contains the subscribers' names, the number of shares purchased, and the amount of cash received. This collection also has a certification by the clerk of court of Camden County, North Carolina, concerning condemnation of land for use by the company, 1794, an inquisition and plat of land for a feeder canal, 1812, and a memorandum concerning certain company activities, 1823-1834

The Dismal Swamp Canal company was incorporated in 1787 in Virginia for the purpose of construction of a waterway between Hampton Roads and Albemarle Sound. The canal was opened in 1805, and improved after 1826.
