Organized in Prince George County under the command of Captain Edmund Ruffin, Jr., the unit also was known as the Prince George Cavalry and the Prince George Dragoons. The company became part of the 16th Virginia Cavalry Battalion on June 26, 1862, then part of the 13th Virginia Cavalry Regiment on July 29, 1862
