Biographical or historical data
Joseph Bryan was born on 13 August 1845 in Gloucester County, Virginia. He served with Mosby's Rangers during the Civil War and was active in Conservative and Democratic politics during the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction years in Virginia. He was a lawyer, industrialist, and newspaper publisher. In 1887, he bought the RICHMOND TIMES and later the RICHMOND DISPATCH. He merged the papers in 1903. In 1908, he bought Richmond's other major daily newspaper, the RICHMOND NEWS LEADER. He died on 20 November 1908.
